JEMMA: One Month After

A lot of development has occurred since the first JEMMA release at the EU Utility Week in Amsterdam. A number of developments have already been staged in Milestone 0.1 and several others are being discussed for inclusion in the development road-map.

We are very happy with the feedback we got from early adopters and we have perceived an increasing interest (and great expectations) by several industries, organizations, universities and developers interested in using or eventually extending JEMMA.

We are thus launching two initiatives to increase awareness and foster communication among developers and interested people.
  1. The Energy@home association, which uses JEMMA as its reference implementation, is about to launch a dedicated Working Group to help ensuring that the open specifications produced by associations are rapidly and harmonically implemented in JEMMA. The activities of the WG will start officially in December, involving representatives for partners of the association.
  2. We are also officially launching the activities on the JEMMA General Mailing list, which now includes all the active developers and contributors. All interested users and developers are welcome to make questions, get help from other users or to discuss the future directions of the framework.  Join us !

Energy@home announces JEMMA!

http://jemma.energy-home.org
We are proud to announce the first release of the JEMMA, version 0.0.1.

The following press release has just been published on the Energy@home website:

The Energy@home Association today announced the release of JEMMA (Java-based Energy Management Application framework), an open-source project that facilitates the development of home energy management applications.

Telecom Italia, one of the Association’s founding members , developed the Jemma open-source project as part of its research and development activities, in order to establish technologically advanced applications dedicated to “smart home” services.

Jemma implements the Energy@home technical specifications, it has been tested in several interoperability events and it is being used in a field trial involving some private households.
“JEMMA is being released as a part of the Energy@home association commitment towards standard, open and interoperable solutions. This framework will allow software developers to fasten the implementation of energy management applications for the smart home.” said Fabio Bellifemine, Director of the Energy@home Association. “It provides a complete, cloud-enabled home energy management solution allowing to virtualize, interconnect, monitor and control smart appliances, smart plugs, and any other user device compliant with the ZigBee Home Automation 1.2 standard”.

The entire platform is released under the Lesser General Public License version 3 (LGPLv3) which allows its re-use also in commercial deployments.  This choice has been made to allow the broadest participation both by industries and by academic communities which are warmly invited to contribute by developing new features or suggesting new ideas.

“We are very proud to coordinate the JEMMA open-source community”, said Giovanni Colombo, Director of Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (ISMB), that it is going to coordinate the evolution of the JEMMA project. “We hope this will be another successful example of how researchers can work effectively with industries and open-source communities to foster innovation in economic and social processes of critical sectors such as energy.”

JEMMA is fully written in Java and is thus compatible with most home gateway solutions. Thanks to its OSGi-based software architecture and its permissive license, it can be easily extended by simply deploying additional features as OSGi components.

After this initial release of JEMMA a number of new developments and improvements have been already staged for release and planned for the next months.  More details can be found on the official website of the JEMMA project (http://jemma.energy-home.org).

About the Energy@home Association

Energy@home is a non-profit association of companies with the mission of developing and promoting specifications, technologies, products and services for energy efficiency in smart homes. The Association was founded on July 2012 by Telecom Italia, Electrolux, Enel Distribuzione, and Indesit Company. It aims at the widespread adoption of a communication infrastructure that enables the provisioning of value-added services based upon information exchanges related to energy usage, energy consumption and energy tariffs in the home area network, including the smart meter and the customer appliances. The Association today counts 19 companies as its members and is an acknowledged contributor to the ZigBee Home Automation 1.2 standard that was released in July 2013, incorporating the new features resulting from the Energy@home technical specifications.
